Program Description

The Pueblo Community College (PCC) Health Information Management (HIM) Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program provides a student-centered experience in a curriculum designed to create workforce-ready graduates who successfully complete professional credentialing exams and meet the needs of future employers. The PCC HIM program is also designed for accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) with the intention of earning the accreditation status within 2 years so that the graduates will be eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator credentialing exam.

The PCC graduate will understand the issues in contributing to quality healthcare, have a heart for the needs of the patient population, and have the technological skills to deliver excellent support to frontline providers and manage all aspects of the health record.  The PCC HIM department and staff value the engagement with our professional community and has dedicated, well-educated staff with deep experience in many areas of health information.  The program is fully online with the exception of the internship in the Capstone class, making it flexible and workable for students with other commitments.  The HIM BAS prepares our graduates for work not only in their local area, but also for the many remote positions available in today’s economy.

Furthermore, PCC is an Approved Educational Partner of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) which influences the technological emphasis of the HIM BAS.  We embrace the growing importance of technology in most aspects of healthcare and strive to provide our students with the skills and competencies to serve well in a rapidly evolving environment while focusing on the fact that health information is human information, keeping the patient and quality care in focus.
